Storm Henk and flooding
Heavy rain from consecutive storms which left the ground saturated and has left wide areas of the United Kingdom under water once again. Storm Henk came just days after Storm Gerrit hit in late December 2023.
Storm Ciarán arrived on 2 November and brought widespread destruction with winds of up to 100mph and heavy rain. Storm Babet flooded thousands of homes in October 2023. There is a very real risk of properties reflooding and further delaying their repair times.
More than 1,000 homes have been flooded in England this week according to the Environmental Agency and about 300 flood warnings remain in place across England and Wales, with more disruption expected over the coming days. The new month may be just five days old, but some places have already had more rain than their January average.
Henk was the eighth named storm in three months, so it has been a busy time for our teams who have responded promptly to claims predominantly in the Midlands, the South and Scotland. The agriculture sector and rural communities have been most affected.
Our teams will continue weekend working and we are ramping up to meet the anticipated demand from this week’s weather events.
Crawford’s early planning and activation of its surge plan means that our response is under control. However, in view of the severity of the situation our surge status is set at red.
As well as responding to agriculture, commercial, domestic, and high net worth claims, our managed repair team, Crawford Contractor Connection, has been responding to claims direct and carrying out emergency repairs, drying and remedial works.
We are currently dealing with elevated claim numbers and our teams are working tirelessly to support our clients and their customers during this time. Our priority is to ensure that all policyholders affected by this extreme weather are assisted urgently.
